Using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate)

Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate) is usually applied one to four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate) exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not apply it to other areas of your body or wrap or bandage the treated area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Wash or soak the affected area thoroughly before applying the medicine, unless it irritates your skin. Then apply the ointment or cream sparingly in a thin film and rub it in gently.

Avoid prolonged use on the face, in the genital and rectal areas, and in skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor.

If you are using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate) on your face, keep it out of your eyes.

If you are using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate) on a child's diaper area, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants. Such use may increase side effects.

Do not apply cosmetics or other skin preparations on the treated area without talking with your doctor.

If your doctor tells you to wrap or bandage the treated area, follow these instructions:

Soak the area in water or wash it well.
While the skin is moist, gently rub the medication into the affected areas.
Cover the area with plastic wrap (such as Saran Wrap or Handi-Wrap.) The plastic may be held in place with a gauze or elastic bandage or adhesive tape on the normal skin beside the treated area. (Instead of using plastic wrap, plastic gloves may be used for the hands, plastic bags for the feet, or a shower cap for the scalp.)
Carefully seal the edges of the plastic to make sure the wrap adheres closely to the skin. If the affected area is moist, you can leave the edges of the plastic wrap partly unsealed or puncture the wrap to allow excess moisture to escape.
Leave the plastic wrapping in place as long as instructed by your doctor. Usually plastic wraps are left in place not more than 12 hours each day.
Cleanse the skin and reapply the medication each time a new plastic wrapping is applied.
Call your doctor if the treated area gets worse or if burning, swelling, redness, or oozing of pus develops.

Precautions While Using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate)

During the first 3 weeks you are using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate), your acne may seem to get worse before it gets better. Full improvement should be seen within 12 weeks, especially if you use the medicine every day. You should not stop using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate) if your acne seems worse at first, unless irritation or other symptoms become severe. Check with your doctor if your acne does not improve within 8 to 12 weeks.

Do not apply any topical product to the same area where you are using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate), unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If applied to the same area treated with Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate), the following products may cause mild to severe irritation of the skin:

Hair products that irritate the skin, such as permanents or hair removal products
Skin products for acne (such as clindamycin or erythromycin) or other skin products containing a peeling agent (such as benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, or sulfur)
Skin products that cause one to be more sensitive to the sun, such as those containing spices or lime
Skin products that are too drying or that contain a large amount of alcohol, such as astringents, cosmetics, shaving creams, or after-shave lotions
Skin products that are abrasive, such as some soaps or skin cleansers
Your doctor may ask you to use other topical products, such as benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, or erythromycin, during your treatment with Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate). Applying the products at different times of the day will lessen the chance of causing skin irritation.

If your skin becomes too dry or red at any time, discuss with your doctor whether you should continue using Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate). Applying creams, lotions, or moisturizers as needed helps lessen these skin problems.

During treatment with Betnovate and Celestone (Betamethasone Valerate), avoid getting too much sun on treated areas and do not use sunlamps. Since your skin may be more prone to sunburn or skin irritation, use sunscreen or sunblocking lotions regularly with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more. Wear protective clothing against sun, wind, and cold weather.
